Minimum subject specific entry requirements:

Mathematics Grade C, English Grade C - Plus GCSE Science B and GCSE Additional
Science B Or GCSE Separate Sciences: Chemistry B, and a B in another Science subject.

Course Content:

AS Units consist of:

F 321: Atoms, Bonds and Groups: You will learn about the atomic structure, acids,
bases and salts including water of crystallisationand the Periodic Table.
F322: Chains, Energy and Resources: You will learn about the basic concepts
and hydrocarbons, halogenoalkanesand analysis including energy and
resources.
F323: Practical Skills 1: You will be assessed internally on qualitative,
quantitative and evaluative tasks set by OCR.
A2 students take AS and then 3 further units:
F324: Rings, Polymers and Analysis: You will learn polymers and synthesis
and analysis of organic compounds.
F325: Equilibria, Energetics and Elements: You will learn rate of reactions,
equilibrium and pH and the transition elements.
F 326: Practical Skills 2: You will be assessed internally on qualitative,
quantitative and evaluative tasks set by OCR.

Assessment:

AS level:
Module F321 is assessed in January and Module F322 in June.
Module F323 is completed throughout the year.
A2 level:
Module F324 is assessed in January and Module F325 in June.
Module F326 is completed throughout the year.

This course will suit you if you are enthusiastic and interested in chemistry,
or have an interest in further study and careers in chemistry or related areas.

Teaching Methods:

You will learn through individual work, group work, independent work, discussions and presentations. Practical work is important and involves carrying out detailed procedures, recording valid observations and accurate measurements, analysing, interpreting and evaluating data and experimental methods. End of topic tests and end of unit tests are set.

Progression:

The specification provides a valuable education for students who take chemistry or related subjects further. It is also an excellent foundation for further study of chemistry, medicine, (and related subjects such as pharmacy and pharmacology) veterinary science, dentists, forensic science or other sciences. Chemistry at Advanced GCE is a respected qualification that allows progression into a number of career areas.
