Minimum subject specific entry requirements: Grade B in either GCSE Resistant Materials,
Graphics or Textiles.

Course Content:

AS Units consist of:

Designing and innovation: Developing your basic design skills in order to solve problems. You will look at external influences that affect the work of the product designer.

Product Analysis: Analyse existing products and visualise new products in the context
of past, present and future possibilities.

Materials and components: You will develop and extend your knowledge of materials
available to product designers.

Industrial and commercial practice: Gain an understanding of various methods of
production and apply appropriate commercial practice into practical projects.

A2 students take AS and then the following units:

Processes: Extend your range of skills via the application of new processes through
practical activity.

Production Systems and Control: You will apply knowledge of production systems and techniques to manufacture high quality products.

Human Responsibility: Examine the consumer factors which impact on designers and which might affect the final nature of a product.

Marketing and Research: This element of the course looks at product design and its
place in the market place.

Assessment:

AS - 2 Hour exam paper 20% Section A requires short answers and Section B requires
a more open-ended written response.

Design and make task 30% (approx 60 hours) Design Briefs provided each year
in September.

a more open-ended written response.

This course will suit you if you enjoy working independently, coursework and designing and
making items.

Progression:

This course will provide a suitable foundation for the study of a wide range of design related course at university or direct level into employment. Career opportunities would include: Product designer, Architect, Interior Designer, Furniture Designer and Engineer.
