Minimum subject specific entry requirements: Grade C in GCSE Drama and English Language. If you have not studied GCSE Drama, then you must have had some other significant and relevant drama experience.

Course Content:

AS Units consist of:

Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre
You will read and study plays written for the theatre, learning how to analyse in a variety
of ways so that you become familiar with the way they are written, acted and directed.
You will explore two contrasting play texts in a practical and active way. At least one of
the plays is explored in the light of a recognised theatre practitioner.
Unit 2: Theatre Text in Performance
You will perform for a chosen audience, demonstrating the skills you have learned.
A2 students take AS and then 3 further units:
Unit 3: Exploration of Dramatic Performance
You will create a unique and original piece of theatre, which you will perform to an audience.
You will be assessed on how you create the play and the play itself.
Unit 4: Theatre Text in Context
You will study, in detail, one set play text and one historical period of theatrical
development.

Assessment:

AS Module:

Unit 1 (Internally assessed)
You will submit a diary of Exploration Notes based on your practical exploration of two
plays and your chosen theatre practitioner. You will also write a review of a live theatre
performance, to perform the role in the way you did.
Unit 2 (Externally assessed)
You will act a monologue or duologue as well as perform a play by a well known writer.
You must also write an explanation of why you chose
A2 Module (Internally assessed):
Unit 3
You will be assessed on the research and development of your play as well as the final
performance in front of a chosen audience. You will also need to produce a DVD of your
performance.
Unit 4 (Externally assessed)

This unit is a written paper. You will watch and review a live performance of a play from
the chosen period and make a comparison with the original staging conditions of the play.
This course will suit you if you enjoy exploring plays, creating theatre, performing plays and analysing theatre critically. You will develop your analytical and creative skills, an ability to communicate effectively with others as well as a thorough understanding of
drama and theatre.

Progression:

This course can lead to further study in Performing Arts (Drama, Theatre Studies) and
Film and Television in Higher Education at degree or HND level, as well as a career in the
entertainment industry. It is also useful for building confidence and improving presentation
skills as well as developing communication skills that employers in any profession look for.
