Minimum subject specific entry requirements: Grade C in GCSE Geography and Grade C GCSE English Language. If you have not studied Geography, a grade C in another Humanities subject.

Course Content:

AS Units consist of:

Unit 1 Global Challenges:
World at Risk identifies the global hazards and associated trends and patterns of global
warming and climate change and addresses how the planet copes with this phenomenon
while identifying future challenges. Going Global focuses on globalisation, world cities and urbanisation and identifies the future global challenges.

Unit 2 Geographical Investigations:
Crowded Coasts identifies sources of competition, how coasts cope with the pressures
and the increasing risks. Rebranding Places examines strategies and management of rebranding rural and urban areas.

A2 students take AS plus the following units:

Unit 3 Contested Planet: Sources of conflict and issues of security which affect many
parts of the world to include energy, water and biodiversity, and the role superpowers
play in global issues
Unit 4 Geographical Research: A research project based on; Tectonic Activity and
Hazards; Cold Environments – landscapes and change; Life on the margins and food
supply; The Geography of Culture, People and Places; Pollution and Human Health at
Risk; or Consuming the Rural Landscape, Leisure and Tourism.

Assessment:

There is no coursework in Geography.
AS - There are two exams at the end of the academic year.
A2 - There are two exams at the end of the academic year.

This course will suit you if you enjoy fieldwork- investigating human and physical
environments. You care about your planet, want to make a difference and ensure a
sustainable future, have a desire to travel and experience the world around you.

You like to ask questions and seek answers to the mysteries life in the 21st Century. You are a global citizen- you realise your actions and the actions of others have
consequences both positive and negative!

Progression:

Geography develops transferable skills such as communication (written and spoken);
Numeracy, graphicacy, problem solving, decision-making and team work. Geography will
develop skills used in a multitude of industries including Leisure and Tourism, Banking,
Civil Service, Journalism, Media and Law and Teaching.
