Minimum subject specific entry requirements: Grade B in GCSE History or if you have not studied GCSE History, any other Humanities subject.

Course Content:

AS Units consist of:

British History Period Studies – The Condition of England 1815-53.
European and World History Period Studies – Democracy and Dictatorship
in Germany -1919-1963.

A2 students take AS plus the following units:

Historical Interpretations and Investigations – Napoleon I, 1795–1815.
Historical Themes– Civil Rights in the USA 1865–1992.

Assessment:

AS British History Period Studies – 1 hour 30 minutes written paper.
European and World History Period Studies– 1 hour and 30 minutes
written paper.
A2 Historical Interpretations and Investigations – Coursework unit
Historical Themes – 2 hour written paper

This course will suit you if you enjoy investigating, comparing arguments, discussion, independent research, working in groups and doing presentations and if you want to know ‘why’ and ‘how’ events happened.

Skills required: considering the importance of events in the past and present, the techniques of critical thinking and the skills necessary to analyse and solve historical problems and the ability to communicate historical arguments and conclusions clearly.

Progression:

The study of History provides students with excellent transferable skills such as problem solving, communication and thinking skills. These skills are valued in many different professions, for example, law, business and administration, the police service, journalism, teaching and the media. History at A-level is a qualification accepted by many university degree courses. Other subjects that go hand in hand with History are Politics, English and Law.
