Exam Board: Edexcel

Minimum subject specific entry requirements:Grade C in GCSE Music and English Language.
If you have not studied GCSE Music, then you must have had some other significant and
relevant music experience.

Course Content:

You will complete three areas of study:

• Music from the Western classical tradition
• The Development of music technology
• Music for the moving image or Words and music.

Through these areas of study you will:

• produce performances using sequencing software, in a range of musical styles;
• make high quality recordings of musical performances;
• compose and arrange using technology;
• develop your knowledge of the principles and development of music technology;
• control and interpret data.

AS Units consist of:

Unit 1: Part (a) Practical Work
(i) Sequencing or recording music (ii) Using technology to arrange and improvise
Part (b) Written Work
Listening and analysing music (1)
A2 consists of AS plus the following units:
Unit 2: Part (a) Practical Work
(i) Sequencing, recording and producing (ii) Using technology to compose music
Part (b) Written Work
Listening and analysing music (2)

Assessment:

You will be expected to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of a range of
music, through the practical aspects of MIDI sequencing, application of recording studies
and use of composition and arranging techniques.

AS Module Unit 1 Part A (i) Coursework and timed, structured commentary
Unit 1 Part A (ii) Coursework
Unit 1 Part B (i) Written Examination
A2 Module Unit 2 Part A (i) Coursework
Unit 2 Part A (ii) Coursework
Unit 2 Part B (ii) Written Examination

This course will suit you if you enjoy music technology, creating and listening to different styles of music and wish to extend your practical experience and understanding of music technology.

Progression:

An AS and A2 in Music Technology can lead to further study of music technology or performing arts at Higher National or degree level. This qualification can also help you on your way to a career in the music industry or to a technology/computer orientated career.
