1 year – AS
2 year – A2.

Exam Board: OCR

Minimum subject specific entry requirements: GCSE Mathematics B GCSE English Language C - Plus GCSE Science B and GCSE Additional Science B Or GCSE Single Science, Physics B and a B in another science subject.

Contact Person: Mr Hayward

Course Content:

AS Units consist of:

G481: Mechanics - Forces and energy affect the motion of objects. You will learn to predict how objects will move by measuring the forces that act upon them and study Galileo’s work on falling objects to explain how objects behave in the world around us.

G482: Electrons, waves and photons - Behaviour of energy in electronic circuits, focusing on concepts like current, resistance, behaviour of light and other forms of electromagnetic energy. This involves the exciting world of quantum physics, which has radically changed the way we describe the universe.

G483: Practical Skills in Physics 1 - You will carry out qualitative (describing), quantitative (measuring) and evaluative (assessing) tasks. Tasks will be performed in our laboratories and marked internally.

A2 consists of AS plus the following units:

G484: Newtonian Physics - Study of Sir Isaac Newton’s theories and how these have shaped our understanding of Physics. You will learn to use concepts like momentum, circular movement, oscillation (swings and springs), and the physics of heating and cooling.

G485: Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics - Advanced concepts in Physics; behaviour of electric and magnetic fields, capacitance in electric circuits and how and why radioactive particles decay. You will learn how discoveries in Physics have shaped imaging and treatment in medicine, and our understanding of the structure and evolution of the Universe.

G486: Practical Skills in Physics 2 - In this unit, you will carry out qualitative,
quantitative and evaluative tasks. You will perform the tasks in our laboratories and t
hey will be marked internally.

Assessment:

AS Physics:
G481: 1hr written exam G482: 1hr 45min written exam
G483: Assessed internally by your teacher
A2 Physics:
G484: 1hr written exam G485: 1hr 45min written exam
G486: Assessed internally by your teacher

This course will suit you if you are good at measuring things precisely, and explaining observations or phenomena in detail. You will enjoy this course if you are or you enjoy understanding how things work.

Progression:

This course provides natural progression onto Physics based university courses, like mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering. More and more universities now have A Level Physics as More and more universities now have A Level Physics as a requirement for studying Medicine.
