BTEC First Children's Care & Learning Development Print E-mail

Course Outline

A BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situation, activities and demands. You will learn about child development, observation of children and planning play activities for children in a nursery.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSE D or E grades or a Distinction in a Level 1 qualification
  • A good standard of Literacy and ICT
  • Prefer coursework to exams

You will study five core units:

Unit 1: Understanding Children's Development:

Knowledge of child development is fundamental to all work with children and this unit enables learners to gain understanding of development from 0-3 years, 3-7 years, 7-12 years and 12-16 years. Learners will find out how children develop in overall terms of growth and development and different aspects of development. This unit requires learners to undertake 300 hours of supervised work placement.

Unit 2: Keeping Children Safe
Unit 3: Communication with Children and Adults
Unit 4: Preparing and Maintaining Environments for Child Care
Unit 5: Professional Development, Roles and Responsibilities in Child Care

You will also take one specialist unit from this list:

Unit 6: Supporting Children's Play and Learning
Unit 7: The Development and Care of Babies and Children Under Three Years
Unit 8: Providing Support for Children with Disabilities or Special Educational Needs.
Assessment

Your coursework will be set and graded by your subject teachers; there is no formal external assessment and you must also complete 300 hours of work experience

Career Opportunities/Progression

A BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development is equivalent to four GCSEs. The practical work placement enables you to gain more experience and insight into the sector, and therefore students who successfully complete the course can progress directly into a supervised role in employment relating to child care or onto a BTEC National or Level 2 or 3 NVQ in Child Care.
