BTEC Introductory Health & Social Care Print E-mail

Course Outline

The level 1 qualification is designed to encourage you to develop the academic skills and the personal qualities you need for learning, work and to help you achieve your full potential.

Vocational qualifications are taught in the context of real jobs and careers in a chosen vocational sector. This gives you a chance to explore the opportunities offered in health, care and early years' organisations.

Entry Requirements

You will normally need to have at least one of the following:

  • An Entry Level qualification
  • An appropriaate standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Related interests and experience
  • Because of all the coursework involved your writing and reading skills will be tested before you are offered a firm place on the course.

You will study:

The course is made up of a number of different units or topics (between 8 - 12) and could include:

  • Health, Social Care and Early Years Organisations
  • Working in Health and Social Care
  • Communication Skills
  • Child Care
  • Equality and Discrimination
  • You will also have Numeracy and English lessons as these are key skills that you will need to work in health, care and early years.

Work Experience Placement

You will complete a work experience placement in the area of Health, Social Care and Early Years. These include placements at day care centres, residential care homes, youth clubs, nurseries, reception classes and many other sections of the community.

Assessment

Your knowledge and understanding of each of the different topics/units will be assessed by coursework. This means that you may have to sample 8 - 12 different pieces of coursework.

Your numeracy skills will be tested by an exam.

Career Opportunities/Progression

If you wanted to continue with your studies you could:

  • Take a qualification at level 2 in Health & Social Care, Child Care or a different subject e.g. Business, Travel and Tourism or Forensic Science
  • Go on to a work based training course e.g. NVQ in Hospitality or Child Care
  • Enter employment
