cope residential 12 nov 2010 1291What we do

We offer support to students in a variety of areas: support with their learning; their English language acquisition skills; their attendance; their friendships; their motivation; their emotional, behavioural and social skills and their language and communication skills.

How we do it

We support students in class. We withdraw students to work on literacy. We withdraw students to develop their language skills. We run an option class in Y10 and Y11, Next Step. We have the Referral Unit. We have a Year 7 Nurture Group. We run a Year 12 Entry Level class which includes ESOL lessons. We work closely with people like the School Home Support Worker (Pat Adams) and the Parent Outreach Worker (Ruba Talukdar). We organise for outside specialists to come into school to help.

Key Stage 3

cope residential 12 nov 2010 0491There is space for 12 students in the Y7 Nurture Group. This specialist support is for those students who would find the change from primary to secondary school very challenging for emotional, social or learning reasons. In Year 7 and 8 (and sometimes in Y9) we withdraw students who have a reading age below 9 so that they can improve their literacy across the curriculum. Some students need to work on an individual or small group language & communication skills programme. Students receive in-class support from LSAs and SEN or EAL teachers. Some students have friendship group sessions with the Referral Unit Staff or may have 1:1 self-esteem improvement sessions.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4, we offer support to the Entry Level classes in English, Maths, Science, Citizenship or ICT, either by offering Partnership (or team) teaching or in-class support from an LSA. Some GCSE classes also benefit from support from our faculty. We teach our own option class: Next Step. This is made up of 2 groups- one for students who are learning English and one for girls who need additional learning support. However, the groups go on (many) trips together. In the Referral Unit, KS4 students work on their coursework and their core skills so that they can reintegrate easily back into the mainstream.   This year there are two new Level 1 option courses - Travel and Tourism and Hospitality and Catering. These are also supported by our faculty.

Students enrolled on the Entry Level course are following an ESOL course. They also have lessons in Adult Literacy, Numeray, Communication, Art, ICT, Performing Arts and the opportunity to attend Fitness sessions. Where support is needed in the Level 1 course (currently Health and Social Care), we aim to provide that through SEN or EAL teacher or LSA support.

Accommodation

The Access and Inclusion Faculty is the biggest faculty in the school and is available across both campuses. The Nurture Group is in the NG1 hut at Harley Grove. The main teaching rooms are F10 at Harley Grove and C20 and C25 at the CTC. These rooms and NG1 have networked computers. We make good use of the LRC space where necessary. The Referral Unit is at the CTC and has 2 teaching rooms and a therapeutic room. Withdrawal lessons take place in a variety of teaching rooms.

Access to Everyday Activities

All students are expected to take a full part in the everyday activities of the school. The Inclusion Co-coordinator will put into place additional adult supervision and support, including transport, if required, to ensure every student can take advantage of outside visits and field trips. If necessary, the school will seek specialist advice. The school constantly reviews all issues relating to full student access to the curriculum and takes regular advice from the Local Authority.

Disabled Access

cope residential 12 nov 2010 2401The main building at Harley Grove has easy access at the front entrance and a lift provides access to all floors, with disabled access toilets on the ground and first floors. However, due the nature of the buildings, parts of which are listed by English Heritage, there is severely restricted access to Science, Technology, Music and Drama. Where appropriate the school has made ‘reasonable adjustments’ to accommodate students and staff. The College Terrace Centre (CTC) has entrance ramps and handrails and a disabled access toilet on the ground floor. Internal stairs restrict full access to the curriculum areas.

Admission of Students with Disabilities

The admission of students into Year 7 at CFGS follows the admission procedure operated by the Local Education Authority. The LEA uses currently published criteria to allocate places to students.
