Art and Design Who we are Ms J. Arnold (Head of Department) In art, craft and design, pupils explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. In art, craft and design, pupils reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries that enrich their lives. How we do it Art and Design GCSE I What will I study? Areas you will study may include; • Drawing and Painting How will the course be assessed? Students who chose an Art and Design course in Year 10 have to submit 2 or more themed units of completed coursework which equals 60 % of your mark. Students also undertake a 10 hour controlled test equal to 40% of your mark at the end of Year 11. What skills will I develop? The skills you will develop doing GCSE Art and Design will be varied. Among them, you will develop a working knowledge of the materials, practices and technology of art and design. How will I know if this course will suit me? You will have enjoyed your art lessons and felt keen to explore new ideas through painting What can I do at the end of the course? You can go on to study Art and Design at A’ Level. Alternatively you may choose to refine your interests and take an Art and Design Vocational course or combine your GCSE in Art to study other subjects to demonstrate your creative abilities. These might include careers in such fields as advertising, marketing, design, architecture, publishing and the media. What visits and Work Related Learning Opportunities will there be? Going on visits to galleries for example Tate Modern and The British Museum to gain research information. Students have also worked with visual artists on specific projects to gain new skills. What we do
n this course students are given topics or themes to follow, within which you will use a range of art and design skills to develop your ideas from research through to final pieces, acquiring the ability to investigate, analyze and experiment.
, drawing, sculpture and printmaking. You will have a good record of completing class work and keeping up to date with your sketchbook. It’s about having an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design and developing the skills to express it.
