Advanced Skills Teacher Information

‘To motivate, excite, lead and drive forward standards in learning and teaching and to raise achievement and aspirations of students’.
What is an AST?

‘AST’ stands for Advanced Skills Teacher. An AST is an excellent teacher who achieves the very highest standards of classroom practice and share their expertise and skills in their own school and its borough.

Why is the AST important?

AST’s in Central Foundation Girls' School are committed to raising achievement and aspirations of students at school, as well as in the borough of Tower Hamlets. We are allocated time specifically to lead projects that drive forward standards in learning and teaching. Therefore we can help students and teachers achieve both their personal and academic best. The nature of a project can wide and varied. Some examples of AST projects we have led last year are:

  • Raising attainment of students in GCSE Dance to 70% grades A - C.
  • Providing exciting and challenging opportunities for G&T KS3 students.
  • Training, motivating and inspiring PE PGCE students in how to successfully deliver dance in the KS3 curriculum.
  • In all projects we lead we strive for ‘excellence’ and see it as essential to motivate, excite and inspire those who participate.

“. . . A PGCE student has told me he is now confident enough to teach dance in his new school. This would not have been the case if he had not experienced your workshops. He said he likes it so much that sometimes he teaches in the corridor rather than not give the pupils a lesson at all!” (Head of PE at Middlesex University, on the training provided for PGCE students by Sarah Swinfin, Dance AST at Central Foundation).
