Sociology

GCSE Sociology

  • Sociology is the study of society, social groups and institutions including: the family, schools, mass media, crime, gangs and subcultures. Sociologists study society and our behaviour in it.

     

  • What will I study?

    You will study 6 topics throughout the two year course.

     

    Year 10 Topics:

    Relevant areas of social theory and methodology – you will learn the key concepts and theories of Sociology and explore different Sociological topics and areas of interest. You will gain an understanding of the different research methods used by sociologists, their strengths and weaknesses.

    The Sociology of families – you will explore the current trends in families and households, examining topics such as family diversity, the roles of men and women in the family, marriage and divorce.

    The Sociology of education – you will gain an understanding of the current structure of the education system and look at sociological views on the role of education. You will examine the reasons for differences in achievement, looking at the impact of social classes, gender and ethnicity.

     

    Year 11 Topics:

    The Sociology of Crime and deviance– you will examine the reasons why people commit crime. You will explore the impact of social class, gender, age and ethnicity on committing crime. 

    The Sociology of social stratification– you will look at examples of inequality in today’s society such as poverty and wealth inequality. You will discuss issues such as the gender pay gap and racial discrimination.

    Relevant areas of Social theory and methodology- you will continue to learn the key concepts and theories of Sociology and explore different Sociological topics and areas of interest. You will gain an understanding of the different research methods used by sociologists, their strengths and weaknesses.

     

    Sociology is assessed through 100% examination. The Exam Board is AQA.
